Pay Attention
jsdt4 asked:
Since most of today’s students can appropriately be labeled as “Digital Learners”, why do so many teachers refuse to enter the digital age with their teaching practices?
This presentation was created in an effort to motivate teachers to more effectively use technology in their teaching.
Please see http://t4.jordandistrict.org/payattention to learn how you can become a better teacher.

half of my friends are listening to music during class or any time during school, on Thursday my friend Pablo unplugged the teacher’s computer to plug in his ipod nano so he could listen to his music, the teacher got so angry at him and told the dean. 30 minutes later Pablo got arrested, three days after that is dad was deported back to El Salvador, weird huh?

WOW. This video is one of the best I have seen in getting this message across and best of all the wave has started to form.
Some people put up barriers. Forget that. We just need to THINK and get creative.

I like the power of this video and the thoughts it promotes. Unfortunately, those who most need to see it (and pay attention) won’t. But I think those of us who do “get it” will be able to lead in spite of those who don’t. This video does a good job of demonstrating how a delivery method can make all the difference.

sad but true.

Says it all! Amazing how many folks are not “paying attention”.

The only problem here is, as stated in the “Did you know?” video…we are not funding our schools properly. Though many people have these devices, there are a good amount that cant afford these devices. If the schools can provide the funds to supply the students, then the poor, lower class students would be at a much greater disadvantage then they already are. I agree that a parent who has given their child these things should most definitely use them to teach though!

I wish I would have been taught this way (class of 2001) but then again … I just had “ADHD” … mmm … funny I’ve learned more in the past 7 years then I did in the 4 I had in HS.
Now, I’m a political blogger, Computer Tech, and Hospitality Auditor …. and yet I had a 2.0 GPA.

Interesting thoughts there. I just recently graduated high school, and I hated it. It was so boring, and I did not see the point in learning what they wanted us to know. I honestly don’t remember much of anything from my math or history classes, but I found that science was important because I wanted to (and successfully did) get into nursing school. Does anyone know what song that was? It’s pretty. Good luck reaching out to your students!

This is an important conversation topic for educators. Instead of just blaming eduction for whatever “woes” we want, we need to have some real conversation. Instead of just accepting (or rejecting) everything that is in the video, we need to use this as a point of discussion. What other views are available? What is missing in the conversation? What are some of the advantages that the US has in terms of education? What do we really want education to accomplish? Let’s take a critical look here.

education standards are poor in my opinion.
there’s very important aspects we are not taught in school/college.
theres very little teaching done on technology/future. Which should be number one on the educating list.
Ive learnt more from stoner conversations with my close friends than i probably ever learnt in school.

Well thats true about School to, in fact only schizophrenics don’t know what the real world is.

“Why do teachers constantly say “real world” it gets kind of annoying?”
Because in the real world if you kill someone, they stay dead.

Actualy more people are litrerate than ever before, if you want to complain about ilerteracy go to some third world country were the averge person makes 660$ a year.
Using cellphones on a test isn’t cheating, it’s coperaction, a much more important skill than basic reading.
Why do teachers constantly say “real world” it gets kind of anoying.

But does your school have computers, in my year twelve class my english literature my teacher created a wiki which we could access from home, or from the labs at school, and add information, change information, ask questions and see answers - our class had some of the highest marks in the state and I would attribute this to the way our teacher engaged us in our material and gave us new ways to participate in it.

Japan also has some very troubled students, who rebel in ridiculous ways, high suicide rate, and they have some terrible ‘fads’ as far as dieting, emulting Western society, I lived there for a year and all I know is that as much as I love Japan, I would never ever allow any child of mine to grow up in their culture or school system.

Fighting technology will only alienate your students. Online databases are one of the greatest sources of information, and fluid material like wiki’s don’t just spread poor information, they are a fun way to communicate opinions. My most effective teacher’s used chat rooms, wiki’s and blog to discuss texts, create class portfolios. We enjoyed the challenge and were excited by what we could do. The effective use of technology will be essential in teaching the next generation ‘net gen’.

Did you know students use cellphones to cheat?
Today’s students (not all but many)do not have the writing skills nor the reading skills to be effective employees of the real work world. Many of my students (seniors)read at a 6th grade of below reading level. The “dumbing down of America.”
